I love your topic, Chris, and I think it will make for a really incredible multigenre inquiry and writing project! In addition to the authors understanding the concept of the monster, I think you can also explore how they utilize it within their writing and identify the purposes it serves them. Add a few motivating questions here that help focus your inquiry for both you and the reader (at least initial questions). And, list a few possible sources as well. You include the link to the wikipedia entry, but what other sources do you have in mind? Mark Edmundson has an interesting book entitled Nightmare on Main Street that you might check out, but it may be focused too much on the impact of the gothic later on...
